This is a photograph of Herbert Arthur Jordan with his schoolbooks. Herbert was born July 24, 1898 and is estimated to be about 11 to 13 years old, suggesting an approximate date of winter of 1910-1911. He has on a very nice coat, scarf, hat and boots. There is snow on his shoulder.

After his mother filed a Bill of Complaint in November 1911, she needed to support her with five children to. And thus Herbert was unable to attend high school as he had to go to work to support the family.

Thus given the nice clothes and still going to school and with snow on the ground, the time of the photo is likely either early 1910 or 1911. I chose early 1910 as more likely when Herbert would have been 11 years old and still in school. His parents’ address in 1910 was 7237 Vincennes, Chicago.

Beverly Lynch inherited this photograph from her father Charles J. Jordan who was the 3rd son of James Oscar Jordan. In the late 1980s, she gave this photo to Dave Jordan. The photo is glued to a cardboard backing. There is no identification on the back of the mounting.
